Ramstein, here we come!

We are finally, unbelievably, actually in Germany!!!  
But , I am really getting ahead of myself.  We left Boise on Monday Sept. 21st at 7:00 A.M. It was a nice flight over to Baltimore by way of Chicago.  We rented a car and drove to our hotel, ate dinner and crashed.  The next day thought we should go to Washington DC because Travis has never been there.  Have you ever tried to do DC in a day?  How about DC in four hours?  How about DC in four hours in 80 degree, 80 percent humidity?  Just kidding...we had a great whirlwind of a time.  We hit the Air and Space Museum, the National Archives, The Museum of Natural History, the outside of the White House and the Washington Monument.  Then we hurried back to Baltimore to return the car and head over to the Air Mobility Command terminal.  We boarded about 8:30 P.M.  and all commented as the wheels left the ground " Wonder when we will be back on U.S. soil?"   It was a reality check moment for sure!  

 The flight was 7 hours and Mike and TJ slept for most of it.  NOT ME!   I slept about an hour.  They fed us two hot meals!  Airplane food for sure and TJ is too young to remember the days when a hot meal was just part of the flying experience.


We arrived at Ramstien AFB at 10:15 am on Wednesday morning.  What a thrill to walk down the all glass jetway, go through customs and walk out into our first beautiful sunny day in Germany!   We were met by Col. Corkern aka "Cork" ( everyone has nicknames or as they say "call signs" around here)  He took us right out to his HUGE Ford Diesel four door truck and started giving us the welcome tour.  The base is compact and easy to navigate.  It is in valley surrounded by rolling hills covered with dense forests or farmland.  It really is a beautiful place!

We are staying at the Vogleweh TLQ (temporary living quarters for those of you who are not up on your military slang).  They didn't have room on Ramstein, but we now have reservations and will be moving over to the Ramstein TLQ on Wed.   It's a good thing to because this place is pretty old, run down and stinky!

It is one bedroom and a small living area.  TJ sleeps on the hide a bed.  It's two stories up and as you can see in the pic, we had a lot to carry up!


That about sums up the trip over and the first day here.  We were all so jet lagged that we were running on some weird alternate energy source in order to get things done.  We got I.D. cards and took drivers tests and rented a car and just kept going like little energizer bunnies.  Finally on Friday morning we got caught up and adjusted.  I will post again tomorrow about our first day of house hunting with more pictures of the villages.  Sorry this was sooooo long but there was a lot going on this week, wouldn't you say!
